Set up the antenna in this order
To set up an indoor TV antenna, check which stations serve your address, connect the antenna's coaxial cable directly to the television's antenna input, select Antenna, Air, Broadcast, or Over the Air in the TV menu, and run a full channel scan. Record the result before moving anything. If channels are missing or unstable, test one higher position or different wall at a time and scan again after each meaningful change.
That sequence matters. Moving the antenna, adding an amplifier, changing the cable, and rescanning all at once may improve the picture, but it will not reveal which change helped. The first goal is not the largest channel count. It is a repeatable baseline and a stable set of stations you actually want to watch.
Before opening the box, check what is available
In the United States, enter the address in the Federal Communications Commission's Digital TV Reception Maps. Make a short list with four columns:

The map is a planning tool, not a reception promise. The FCC says its calculation assumes an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground. It also warns that indoor results can vary with building construction, nearby buildings and trees, weather, terrain, and the receiving hardware. A station marked strong on the map can still be difficult in one room; a careful indoor test may find a useful spot the model cannot describe.
The displayed channel is not always the radio-frequency channel the antenna receives. What matters when choosing an antenna is whether the wanted stations use VHF, UHF, or both. Packaging that says "digital" or "HDTV" does not, by itself, establish useful performance on every band.
Unbox without committing to a permanent position
Lay out every supplied part and match it to the manual before removing adhesive backing or drilling anything. A typical indoor kit may include:
- the antenna element;
- an attached or detachable coaxial cable;
- a stand, clips, suction cups, or removable mounting material; and
- an amplifier or power injector with its own cable or adapter.
Do not assume every small box on the cable is an amplifier or that every amplifier can be bypassed. Follow the labeled signal-flow diagram. If the antenna has a detachable amplifier and its instructions allow a passive connection, leave the amplifier out for the first test. If amplification is built in, power it exactly as directed and treat that as the baseline.
Check the cable and connectors for crushing, cuts, bent center conductors, looseness, or corrosion. Keep cable away from heat, water, pinching windows or doors, and walking paths. Do not route it through a wall, fire barrier, electrical enclosure, or weather-exposed opening as an improvised first-night fix.
Connect the antenna directly to one tuner
Turn the television off before making the physical connection. Find the threaded input labeled ANT IN, RF IN, Antenna/Cable, or similar. Do not force the connector onto an HDMI port or another socket. Thread the coax connector on by hand until it is secure; do not tighten it with a tool unless the equipment manual specifically calls for that.
For the first scan, connect the antenna directly to one television or external tuner. Remove optional splitters, couplers, recorders, network tuners, and extension cables. Each added component creates another place for signal loss, a poor connector, or the wrong menu setting to hide.
Some displays do not contain an over-the-air television tuner. A projector, computer monitor, or tuner-free display needs a compatible external tuner; an HDMI socket alone does not tune broadcast television. Check the exact model manual rather than assuming that every screen with a remote can scan channels.
Antenna reception itself does not use an internet connection. A smart television may request internet access for apps, updates, program data, or its initial interface, but the coaxial antenna signal and broadcast tuner are a separate path.
Choose antenna mode before scanning
Turn the television on and open its channel, broadcast, or live-TV settings. Menu names vary by brand and software version. Look for a sequence resembling:
- Settings or Menu
- Channels, Broadcasting, Tuner, or Live TV
- Auto Program, Auto Tune, Channel Search, or Channel Scan
- Antenna, Air, Broadcast, or Over the Air
Choose antenna or air, not cable. Cable mode searches a different channel plan and can finish with no useful over-the-air stations even when the antenna is connected correctly. If the menu offers a combined cable-and-air scan, use the model manual to confirm what it does.
Run a full scan and let it finish. Do not change inputs or switch off the TV midway through. The scan searches for receivable stations and stores them in the tuner's channel list. This is why simply connecting an antenna may not make a channel appear.
Record the first scan before moving the antenna
Use a small results table:

Watch each wanted station for several minutes. Label it stable, intermittent, or missing. A scan total can include duplicate feeds, subchannels, shopping channels, or stations you do not plan to watch. Six stable wanted stations are a better result than thirty entries with an unstable local-news channel.
Save the exact menu path somewhere in the notes. The next scan will be quicker, and a future software update will be easier to recognize if the labels change.
Test temporary positions, one at a time
Start with the antenna high on an exterior wall or near a window generally facing the desired transmitters. Use a temporary mounting method that is safe for the surface and within the antenna maker's instructions. Keep the coax path loose enough to move the antenna without pulling its connector.
Then use a controlled loop:
- Move the antenna to one new position or orientation.
- Keep cable, splitter, and amplifier state unchanged.
- Run a new full channel scan.
- Test the same wanted stations.
- Record the result before the next move.
Test more than one wall. Metal window screens, low-emissivity coatings, masonry, foil-backed insulation, appliances, ductwork, and neighboring buildings can weaken or reflect signals. A window is a useful candidate, not a universal answer. A position a few feet away may behave differently.
Directional antennas need deliberate aiming; other designs reduce aiming demands but do not receive equally through every obstruction. Use the product's instructions rather than inferring its reception pattern from its shape.

Add amplification only after the direct test
An amplifier can compensate for loss in a long cable or distribution system. It cannot recover a station the antenna does not receive, correct a VHF/UHF mismatch, or remove a building from the signal path. It also raises noise and may overload a tuner when strong signals are present.
If the antenna includes an optional amplifier, compare the same position with the amplifier connected and bypassed, but only in ways the manual permits. Use the supplied or specified power arrangement. Do not substitute an unrelated USB adapter because the plug fits.
If a channel becomes worse with amplification, return to the passive baseline. If several televisions are eventually required, establish reliable reception on one direct connection before adding a splitter or distribution amplifier. Reintroduce the longer cable, splitter, recorder, or network tuner one component at a time and retest the wanted stations after each addition.
What should you do when the first scan finds nothing?
Work down this list without changing multiple items at once:
- Confirm the coax is on the television's antenna or RF input.
- Confirm the scan source is antenna, air, broadcast, or over the air rather than cable.
- Check whether the screen has an internal tuner or needs an external one.
- Check every connector and any required amplifier power.
- Connect directly, removing splitters and optional devices.
- Move the antenna to a temporary high position on another exterior wall.
- Run a new full scan after the move.
If the scan finds some stations but misses one wanted station, compare that station's band and tower direction with the antenna's documented capability and the position tested. If the picture breaks into blocks or freezes, reception is marginal at that moment; record it as intermittent rather than calling it received.
The FCC's consumer alert on reception and rescanning explains that scanning searches for and remembers available digital broadcast channels. It also recommends trying a higher position, a location near a window, greater separation from other electronic equipment, and a changed antenna direction, with another scan after moving.
When should you clear the stored channel list?
A normal full rescan is enough after most setup changes. If a television holds obsolete channel information after a station frequency change, the FCC describes a five-step "double rescan": disconnect the antenna, scan with it disconnected, unplug the television or tuner for at least one minute, reconnect the antenna and power, then scan again.
Use that as a specific reset for stale channel memory, not as the first response to weak reception. Clearing the list cannot improve the signal reaching the antenna, and it temporarily removes stations that were already stored. Follow the current device manual and broadcaster notice if either gives a model- or station-specific procedure.
Make the winning position permanent only after retesting
Once one position wins, test the wanted stations at more than one time of day and, if possible, on another day. Weather and moving foliage can expose a marginal path. Confirm that the cable can be secured without a trip path, pinched door, heat source, or damaged wall finish.
Then mount the indoor antenna using the approved non-penetrating method. Do not drill as part of a first-time placement test or improvise a route through an exterior wall. If permanent attachment requires drilling where wiring, plumbing, or other concealed services may be present, use a qualified installer.
Keep outdoor and attic installation professional
An indoor setup ends where ladders, roofs, attic work, structural attachment, weatherproof cable entry, grounding and bonding, or power-line clearance begin. Do not mount or move an antenna near overhead conductors. Route elevated, outdoor, grounding, structural, and concealed-cable work to a qualified installer who follows current electrical and building requirements and the antenna manual.
If indoor reception cannot hold the wanted stations, take the FCC map, position log, stable-channel list, and cable layout to the installer. That evidence makes the next decision specific: improve height, change antenna capability, reduce distribution loss, or accept that a station is not reliable at the address.
