Your television may be perfectly positioned for watching from the sofa while the antenna needs a different part of the room. This guide helps you choose between accessible indoor locations after the antenna and tuner are correctly set up.

The procedure below is an original editorial comparison method. It is not a report of product testing, a professional signal survey, or a promise that an indoor antenna will work at an address.

How do you turn tower information into a room shortlist?

Find the transmitter serving each wanted station, rather than assuming it is at the studio or in the direction of the nearest city. In the United States, Antennas Direct's lookup documentation describes a transmitter locator with tower headings, distances and broadcast bands. Check the broadcaster's own reception information when identifying a particular service.

Write the station name, its displayed channel and its actual broadcast band on a private sheet. The displayed number does not reliably identify whether the broadcast uses VHF or UHF. Keep the antenna's documented band capability beside the list; changing walls cannot establish a capability the manufacturer does not specify.

Draw a simple room outline and mark the general tower direction. Include the TV, windows, exterior walls, doorways and existing cable route. This is a planning sketch, not a radio-coverage calculation. Do not publish your home address or floor plan.

Choose a small number of candidate positions you can handle while standing securely on the floor. A high window beyond comfortable reach is not a candidate for this exercise.

Is a window always better than a wall?

No. A window toward the transmitters is worth considering because the signal may encounter less intervening wall material. But the construction around it matters.

Mohu's placement discussion identifies metal around windows as a possible reception obstacle. Antennas Direct also names brick, metal siding, radiant barriers and stucco among construction materials that can reduce indoor reception. Those facts support comparing positions; they do not identify the cause of a particular missing channel.

Record what you can see without dismantling anything: a metal screen, a large neighbouring building, or substantial metal furniture nearby. If you do not know what is inside a wall or window assembly, write “unknown.” Do not remove screens, insulation or building components to conduct this test.

Use a manufacturer-permitted stand or temporary attachment suitable for the surface. Keep the window closed, its operation unobstructed, and cables clear of its moving parts. Do not lean through a window or place an indoor-only antenna outside.

How much do height and direction matter?

Both can matter, but neither is an instruction to reach the highest possible point. The FCC's 2009 placement notice recommends trying a window, a higher location, separation from other electronics, and a different antenna direction. Here, “higher” means another accessible position within the safe indoor boundary.

Channel Master's location guidance also weighs reception against access and practicality. Its discussion explains that different points around a home can give different results. A location that demands a hazardous cable route or difficult access is not a usable winner.

Follow your antenna manual for which side faces the transmitters and how it may be oriented. Do not infer that from a logo or the colour of a flat panel. Begin with the suggested direction, then compare allowed orientations separately from changes in position.

Keep powered electronics in their normal operating state during the comparison. Moving the antenna away from the television is one location change; simultaneously changing nearby equipment would make the result harder to interpret.

How do you compare positions without losing track?

Use an A–B–A sequence: starting position A, candidate B, then the original A again. This return check does not eliminate changing reception conditions, but it prevents you from simply assuming the first observation still holds.

  1. Describe A precisely. Record the surface, orientation, time, cable and amplifier state. Do not bypass an integrated amplifier or change its supply.
  2. Scan and observe. Follow the TV's channel-scan instructions, then check the same wanted stations for picture and sound interruptions.
  3. Move to B. Use the equipment manual's handling and power instructions. Keep the cable and allowed amplifier configuration the same. Rescan and repeat the station check.
  4. Return to A. Restore the recorded position and orientation, rescan, and check the same stations again.
  5. Interpret the whole record. If A has changed substantially since the first check, do not attribute the difference solely to B's location.

The FCC notice supports rescanning after an antenna move. It does not prescribe this A–B–A worksheet or a universal observation duration. Use comparable viewing periods and record their lengths; longer observation still cannot guarantee future reception.

Keep cable clear of footpaths, heaters, water and pinching doors. Stop if the cable cannot reach without tension or an unsafe route. Do not add an extension during the same comparison and describe the result as placement alone.

What does a worked comparison look like?

The following numbers and observations are entirely fictional. Three wanted stations are labelled News, Public and Sports; these are not real call signs or results from our testing.

B has 18 rather than 24 entries: six fewer. Yet it supplies all three wanted services without interruptions during the fictional checks, versus two at A. If those are the household's priorities, B is the better candidate to retest—not proof of permanent reliability.

Now change one observation: suppose News is also interrupted when B is tested again. The correct note is “B did not repeat,” not “the antenna needs more power.” Placement records identify observations; they do not diagnose every signal problem.

What should happen before you commit?

Revisit the preferred position during the times you normally watch television. Keep the same wanted-station list. Record interruptions honestly, including a station that appeared in the scan but could not be watched reliably.

Then review the everyday arrangement: can the antenna stay in its approved position, can the window operate, and can the cable remain protected without blocking access? Follow the mounting instructions and surface requirements. Do not drill, conceal cable or alter electrical equipment as part of this room test.

Returning to position A after trying B checks whether the original observation repeats. Keep equipment configuration unchanged and rescan according to the tuner instructions. What if the best antenna position needs a longer cable?

Stop if the existing cable would be taut, pinched or cross a walking route. A different cable changes the configuration, so any later comparison needs a newly recorded baseline and manufacturer-approved parts. Do not improvise exterior or concealed wiring, drill through building surfaces, or modify mains equipment; use qualified professionals for that work.
